Easter Sunday Part IV: Xativa Castle continued

Our foray into the giant castle continued, The dark dungeons (left) which led far deeper into the wall than expected - to the left of the room there was a tiny door one had to duck through, which led to a solid stone cell, claustrophobic and impenetrable.
The main street of the castle complex (right), with a view of its layout.

Badly damaged by the earthquake, it was hard to imagine this area as it had once been.

Finally we reached the pinnacle of the castle, a high tower with a view of the surrounding landscape and a good idea of the sickening drop to the side.

It was from here that we could see just how defensible this position was, on one side only a thin and winding steep road led up to the castle (a modern addition of course) on the other the mountain fell away to steep sides which would have been impossible to climb. And behind me where you cannot see, jagged rocks ringed the edge followed by a sickeningly sheer drop - It would have been impossible to breach from this side.

A full view of the castle, it reminded me of something from Game of Thrones.
The first entrance to the castle itself (right) with a heavy wooden door completely plated in metal. We walked on the way back down, which took probably a good hour however was rather leisurely and enjoyable. I shudder to think about walking up.
Shattered from our long day, we retired early.
Sunday we made homemade cinnamon rolls (which were extremely amazing) and had a fancy champagne breakfast followed by a lovely roast lunch.
Overall it was a brilliant weekend.
