Sorrento

Driving out of Pompeii to Sorrento was possibly the most terrifying experience of my life. Drivers decided on lanes wherever they wanted them, cars stopped halfway across the road to force their way in to turn, and don't even get me started on the mopeds who clearly thought they were invincible. However Shyla drove it like a pro and in no time at all we were cresting the hill, jagged cliffs falling into azure water resplendent before us.

The town of Sorrento itself was also gorgeous full of alleyway markets, tucked away gelato stores and terra coot houses. All by a magnificent harbour falling away to the wild cliffs and ocean below. Our campsite (recommended by trusty old lonely planet) was two minutes walk from the town and owe were able to pitch our tent on the cliff edge with a magnificent view of the harbour (marred only slightly by the smell of rotting fish wafting gently upwards to us).

The first day we spent organising the ferry to Greece, our route on the Amalfi coast, and exploring the city. It was within the city's winding alleyways that we stumbled across a lovely gelato place. Run by a little old woman and her son, it had been in the family four generations and they were obviously very proud of their little shop. Lemonchello proved delicious and the raspberry was the best I've ever had. Friendly, tucked away and family run, it was my favourite place so far.

The next day we took the ferry over to Capri which was my favourite day so far. We arrived in the morning to a beautiful day and blue blue harbour. We walked up to the central town of Capri which had beautiful views but the narrowest and steepest streets yet to get to. We found a little pastry shop with the best spinach and ricotta quiche I've ever had in my life and bubba rum to die for.

We then went to the gardens of Augustus which were breathtakingly beautiful and held stunning views down to the sea.

My favourite part of the day however was when we decided to find a beach off the beaten track after seeing how packed the main tourist one was. We ended up lost on little local backstreets covered by the shade of grape vines winding around gnarled and sun beaten wood. It was magical and there wasn't another person in sight.

Finally we made it down to the beach and it was all worth it. The water wasn't even cold!

This view is taken from the rock we are sunbathing on. Best day so far!!
